Yvonne McGaha
Counseling Student Intern
Over the past 25 years, I’ve worked with children and youth in various roles, including Home Visitor, Skills Development Specialist, and Intervention Paraprof. Serving (past) on the Board of Directors for the Box Elder Family Support Center for several years also opened my eyes to the mental health needs of the community and the resources that are available to families. As a practicum student at Grace and Peace, I have had the opportunity to witness what I always knew – that integrating faith into the therapeutic process can positively affect healing and change in a person.
About Me
I am a Counseling Student Intern who completed my practicum experience with Grace and Peace Christian Counseling. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Utah State University and am currently pursuing a master’s degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling. Originally from California, I moved to Utah with my family at the age of twelve and have since made it home. Before entering the counseling field, my college education began in engineering. Although I excelled in math and physical sciences, I soon realized my true passion was working with people and supporting them through life’s challenges. This realization led me to change my major to Psychology and ultimately pursue a career in counseling. My personal faith journey has also been deeply influential. While I grew up knowing about God, I did not develop a personal relationship with Him until adulthood. Through that experience, I came to understand the healing power of grace, forgiveness, and compassion—values I now carry into my counseling work. I approach therapy with warmth, empathy, and respect, striving to meet each client exactly where they are without judgment or expectations. I believe every person has inherent worth and value placed within them by their Creator, and I seek to create a safe, supportive environment where clients feel heard and understood. My counseling approach is primarily Person-Centered and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and I also utilize Play Therapy techniques when working with younger clients. I plan to continue expanding my skills by incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Art Therapy, and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) into my practice. I have extensive experience working with children and youth in a variety of roles. I served as a Home Visitor with Head Start, helping parents prepare their children for kindergarten, teaching parenting skills, and connecting families with community resources. I also worked with Bear River Mental Health as a Skills Development Specialist, supporting young children and teens in areas such as anger management, self-esteem, and communication skills. In addition, I spent several years as an intervention paraprofessional working with middle school students. I especially enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of children and adolescents, while also finding great fulfillment in working with adults. My counseling experience includes supporting clients with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship concerns, boundaries, and family dynamics, among other challenges. For clients who value faith and spirituality, I am comfortable integrating those beliefs into the therapeutic process. Outside of counseling, I enjoy reading, biking, gardening, outdoor photography, and writing children’s books—creative outlets that reflect my appreciation for growth, imagination, and connection.
